Sidney Hassenfeld will be remembered as an amazing and charismatic man; loving and protective son, brother, husband, father, Zayda, and friend. He lived his life with integrity and strength. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy, Sid worked evenings and weekends as a pharmacist to pay his way through Dental School. He also served in the United States Air Force for two years in Germany. Following his military service, Dr. Hassenfeld earned a Certificate in Periodontics at New York University and had an active practice in Bergen County, New Jersey for 35 years. After retiring from dentistry, he received a degree in Exercise Science and became certified as a Health Fitness Instructor by the American College of Sports Medicine. As a personal trainer, Sid helped many people get stronger and healthier through better fitness behaviors. He ultimately accepted a teaching position at Bergen Community College, where he shared his passion for Exercise Science with his students. Sid was known for his animated story- and joke-telling, his roaring laugh, his iconic ponytail & denim style, and his deep commitment to family. He was respected in his careers as a periodontist and personal trainer; his dedication to core values, Jewish identity, and love of nature; and his determination to live life to its fullest. He shared these values with and devoted himself to his wife Barbara, and their three children and their spouses, six grandchildren, and his beloved dogs.
Sid loved playing folk music on his many Martin guitars, practicing and teaching karate (5th degree black belt), hiking, boating, beautifying his yard, and spending time with family. His humor and playful creativity fostered the special club he created with his grandchildren and grand-nieces and nephews, and through the council of the CrumBums, he taught the importance of responsibility, group dynamics, and not to take life too seriously - emphasizing fun, love, humor, and irony - sealed with a secret handshake. Our extended family maintains strong connections because of their special bond and fond memories of CrumBum experiences through the years. Dr. Sidney Hassenfeld was a warrior to the end and continued sharing his passions in life until he lost his two-year battle with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2010 at the age of 76.   His family profoundly loves and misses him.
